    The first used Mazda CX-9 models used a 3.5L Ford V6 engine. They were styled closely after Mazda’s smaller SUV, the CX-7 and features sleek, sloping lines, angular headlamps, and 18-inch wheels were standard. The interior of the CX-9 is roomy, with plenty of small cargo storage and organization in the center console as well as in dash and side and rear-seat pockets. There are three rows of seating on board the CX-9 and enough room to accommodate passengers and cargo due to the CX-9’s flexible seat and cargo configurations.

    For the 2008 model year, the Mazda CX-9 received two awards, The Motor Trend SUV of the year and the American Truck of the Year Award. This was the same year that the CX-9 switched to a 3.7L engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. During this generation, safety technology included front and side airbags, including side curtain airbags, a backup camera, electronic stability control technology, traction control, and roll stability control.

  • 2010-2015

    In 2010, the Mazda CX-9 got a small facelift that included the addition of Bluetooth and improved connectivity, climate control that covered three-zones on board, and on the exterior, the CX-9 got a new look up front with a redesigned front fascia.

    2013 brought more style changes for the Mazda CX-9 that mainly focused on the exterior of the SUV. Changes included a new grille, redesigned front vents, and new headlights.

    In 2015, the Mazda CX-9 was still among the most stylish, high-performance, and capable SUVs in the midsize crossover class. At this point, it had seating for seven passengers in its three rows and clocked an EPA estimated fuel efficiency of 17 city and 24 highway MPG. While it had many of the same features other SUVs had in its class, its exterior and interior styling, plus its reputation for being one of the only SUVs in its class that was really fun to drive, the Mazda CX-9 stood out from the crowd.

    The second generation of the Mazda CX-9 was kicked off with the introduction of the 2016 model year. The second generation no longer shared an engine type with Ford models but was now based on Mazda’s SkyActiv technology, the same engines that is used by all Mazda models from 2011 forward. The SkyActiv engine that the CX-9 used is the 2.5L four cylinder engine that gives drivers 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and is the base for the Mazda CX-9’s peppy drive. The current generation of the Mazda CX-9 has a new body design that follows Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy, a design that is fluid and improves the look and the function of the vehicle. On the exterior, this model year adds the Soul Red Crystal Metallic as a new, bright color option. On the interior, the color options remain the same as the 2016 and 2017 model years – Black, Sand, and Auburn (only available at the highest trim level). The body itself is slightly shorter, while the wheelbase remains longer, which gives it less front and rear overhang at the base of the SUV.

    New safety tech was added in abundance in this current generation, including stop/start function, lane keep assist and lane departure warning technology and radar-controlled cruise control. Most Mazda models, including the CX-9 crossover, come standard with the safety features on blind spot monitoring, and low-speed emergency braking detection. The Mazda CX-9 maintains its fuel efficiency with an EPA estimated fuel efficiency of 24 combined MPG.

    The CX-9 is Mazda’s largest SUV, and it is at the top of its class in almost every category.
