  • Overview

A red 2015 used Jeep Renegade is facing left.

A used Jeep Renegade is a triumph in off-road capability, fuel efficiency and affordability. All models to date, from 2015 to 2019, belong to the same generation and body shape. This means that while each and every Renegade was created with a similar looking exterior, only minor things have changed over its five years of production.

The amount of options each Jeep Renegade comes with can be overwhelming. Don’t pay for more than you want or need. With five years of Jeep Renegades available, and far more trims of Renegades, you have options and we have research. When considering a Jeep Renegade, comb through our research of this subcompact SUV through the years.

  • 2015

A green 2015 used Jeep Renegade is parked on the side of the road during a sunset.

Driving a used 2015 Jeep Renegade is an enjoyable experience. You will notice the durability of a Jeep suspension, a responsive manual or an automatic transmission, and plenty of space in the backseat and cargo area that a compact SUV promises. The first Jeep Renegade was introduced to the world in 2014. It was quickly embraced as a less expensive, off-road capable, and more fuel-efficient version of the famous Jeep Wrangler. With circular headlights on either end of a classic 7 panel rectangle grill, the Renegade has the unmistakable marks of a Jeep.

The 2015 trims are as follows, from least to most expensive; Sport, Latitude, Limited, and the Trailhawk. The highest-end trim Trailhawk comes standard with four-wheel drive. However, each of the first three trims before the Trailhawk (the Sport, Latitude, and Limited) come available in front-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive. The Sport and Latitude models are the first and second trims. They come available with a 1.4L turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission that only runs on premium unleaded gasoline. This engine can come in as four-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive.

Reviews on the drivability and capability of the 6-speed manual turbocharged engine are positive. Drivers remark that changing gears is smooth and the suspension supports bumps and changes in inclines. The Limited and Trailhawk trims come standard with a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine running on a 9-speed automatic transmission. This bigger-block engine, which runs on regular unleaded gasoline, is equipped with 20 more hp than the 1.4L turbocharged engine. While the Limited is available in four-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive, the Trailhawk comes standard with four-wheel-drive.

The turbocharged engine on front-wheel-drive will yield an EPA estimated 27 mpg combined, with 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The same turbocharged engine on four-wheel-drive receives 27 combined mpg, with the same measurements for city and highway mileage. The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, with a 9-speed automatic transmission in four-wheel-drive yields a combined 25 mpg, 22 mpg city and 30 mpg on the highway. The 2.4L 4-cylinder in front-wheel-drive yields 24 combined mpg, with 21 city and 29 highway.

Expect to find a 2015 Jeep Renegade Sport within the vicinity of $10,000-$18,000. The price variance is first-off due to whether the Sport is equipped with front or four-wheel-drive. Do not expect the Sport model, front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive, to have modern-day touches on the inside. Conveniences like Bluetooth technology, an infotainment display, or air conditioning will not come until you purchase a Renegade Limited (the second to highest trim) for $13,000-$20,000.  A 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk is within the $14,000-$21,00 range. The Trailhawk offers front and rear red tow hooks, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and several driving modes for snow, sand, mud and regular pavement travel. The Trailhawk comes standard with keyless entry, remote engine start and cruise control. A leather package is available for the Trailhawk as well.

The available safety features of a 2015 Jeep Renegade include blind spot and cross path detection, lane departure warning, ParkSense rear park assist system and full speed front-wheel-drive collision warning. None of these safety features come standard on a Renegade. Expect to pay more for these. For the record, the advanced safety features will be available in all of the following model year Renegades. If you feel more comfortable going one trim lower than the Trailhawk, the Jeep Limited falls in the $14,000-$18,000 price range. The Limited also comes available in front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive and a sleek infotainment display.

  • 2016

An orange 2016 Jeep Renegade is parked on a dirt road near Cincinnati, OH.

Changes to the Jeep Renegade from 2015 to 2016 did not differ strongly. Remember, there is only one generation of Jeep Renegade, which means the exterior did not and will not change dramatically, from year to year. The trims still remain the Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk. There is still a front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive option for each vehicle, except for the Trailhawk. The differing engine compositions remain the same. Fuel economy and safety features are also identical. (Please see the 2015 Renegade descriptions above to read our in-depth analysis). What is new for 2016, are 3 different available color packages, available Beats audio speakers and rain-sensing windshield wipers. These color packages include a granite crystal metallic clearcoat, dark blue, light grey, and dark green option.

As we move into pricing, a 2016 Jeep Renegade Sport will cost around $12,000-$20,000. The Renegade Latitude will run in the $13,000-$1,000 range. The Limited is expected to cost $13,500-$22,000, and a 2016 Trailhawk pricing is in the area of $15,500-$23,000, depending on mileage, crash history and signs of use.

  • 2017

A dark blue 2017 Jeep Renegade is driving on a highway overlooking mountains.

In 2017, the Jeep Renegade keeps all of its previous trims, with the same front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive options. The engine options also stay the same, along with their respective fuel efficiency statistics (See the 2015 Jeep Renegade tab for details). Unlike the years before it, the 2017 Jeep Renegade Sport front-wheel-drive comes standard with automatic, instead of manual, transmission. This is a really helpful piece of information for those looking to keep their budget low while still purchasing a Renegade with automatic transmission. Updated safety features for 2017 include automatic high beam control and high intensity discharge headlamps. The safety features from 2015 and 2016 carried over for 2017 (See 2015 Jeep Renegade description). New in 2017 were more modern conveniences that come standard. Keyless entry, push-button ignition and antilock brakes come standard in each and every 2017 Jeep Renegade. Hypergreen clearcoat is the all-new, eye-catching color package for the Renegade in 2017.

You can find a used 2017 Renegade Sport for between $13,000 and $20,000. A 2017 Jeep Latitude will cost you $14,00 to $21,000. The Renegade’s second-highest trim, the Limited, will cost you $14,000-23,000. Expect an asking price of $16,000-$24,000 for the 2017 Trailhawk.

  • 2018

A red 2018 Jeep Renegade is driving on a busy city street near Cincinnati, OH.

With the dawn of 2018, come multiple changes to the Renegade. To begin, the Renegade gains 2 limited edition trims, called the Altitude and Upland. Among the previous long-lasting lineup of Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk, the Altitude and Upland are higher-end trims than the Latitude, but not higher than the Limited.

As limited-edition vehicles, the Altitude and Upland will reflect the unique pairings of exterior and interior stylings. To begin inside of the Altitude, the driver is arm’s distance away from a 7-inch diagonal touchscreen display. The seats will be finished in cloth. On the exterior, side-view mirrors are equipped with flashing turn signal capabilities. Fog lights and 18-inch high gloss black wheels complete the picture. The all-new Altitude is available in FWD and AWD. Underneath the hood will be the 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Expect an Altitude to have an asking price anywhere between $18,500 and $22,000.

The Renegade Upland is a step-up from the Altitude. And Rightfully so. It comes standard with four-wheel-drive and carries the same 2.4L 4-cylinder 9-speed automatic transmission engine that the Trailhawk does. While it does not have back tow hooks, the Upland comes equipped with front tow hooks in black. Inside, flares of orange will line air conditioning vents and Beats audio speakers. The Upland is equipped with a touchscreen display as well. 17-inch low-gloss black wheels finish-off the limited edition look of the Renegade Upland. A fair price for a used Renegade Upland will be priced between $22,000 and $24,000. Pricing on the rest of the 2018 Renegades are as follows. The 2018 Jeep Renegade Sport is available for $19,000-$20,500. The Latitude costs around $20,500-$23,000. The Limited costs $24,000 - $27,500, and the Trailhawk will cost between $25,000 and $27,000. Jeep did not introduce new safety features for the 2018 model year.

  • 2019

A silver 2019 Jeep Renegade is driving through sand.

For the 2019 model year, the Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk remain the four staples in the available Jeep Renegade trims. The Sport, Latitude and Limited still come available in front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive for 2019. However, Renegade drivers in 2019 will no longer be able to use an manual transmission.

The former 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with manual transmission has now been replaced with a turbocharged 1.3L 4-cylinder engine only available in a 9-speed automatic transmission. This new turbocharged engine runs on regular unleaded gasoline instead of premium, which will help customers at the pump. It also yields 17 more hp than the previous turbocharged engine. The introduction of the new turbocharged engine leaves the 2.4L 4-cylinder, 9-speed automatic transmission standard on the Sport, Latitude, Upland and Altitude trims.

The fuel efficiency of the 2019 Jeep Renegade is very similar to years’ prior. The automatic turbo the front-wheel-drive yields an EPA estimated 27 combined mpg, 24 mpg city, and 32 mpg highway. The same engine in an four-wheel-drive Renegade gets 26 mpg combined, 23 city and 29 mpg highway. The 2.4L 4- cylinder engine that is standard on the Sport and Latitude is less fuel efficient than the turbocharger, yielding a combined 25 mpg in front-wheel-drive and 24 combine mpg in four-wheel-drive.

The all-new 2019 limited edition High Altitude joins the Upland and Altitude as one of the three limited edition trims for 2019. The 2019 Altitude will offer more flash and convenience for the urban driver, while the Upland’s front tow hooks and adaptive fog lamps best serve a rural warrior. Each vehicle has cloth seating and Uconnect 4 technology. The Altitude will sport a larger display and also comes with the optional turbocharged engine.

The all-new special edition 2019 High Altitude has an MSRP higher than that of the Trailhawk. With leather interior, the largest possible touchscreen display for a Renegade (8.4 inches diagonal), navigation and the turbocharged engine standard, the High Altitude is the highest-end Renegade to date. The 2019 Jeep Renegade Sport has an MSRP of $22,275. The Latitude has an MSRP of $24,125. The Special Edition Renegade Upland has an MSRP of $25,070. The Special Edition Renegade Altitude has an MSRP of $25,120. The all-new special edition Renegade High Altitude has an MSRP of $28,390. The Renegade Limited has an MSRP of $26,645. The Renegade Trailhawk has an MSRP of $27,795.

All-new safety features for 2019 include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop: a feature that adjusts driving speed according to the distance between your Renegade and the car in front of it, while in cruise control. ParkSense with rear park assist, lane departure warning, and full-speed forward collision warning are examples of the remaining safety features from 2015 that are still available in safety packages for the 2019 Jeep Renegade.
