While the Jeep Patriot’s production was discontinued in 2017, it is still possible to get a used Jeep Patriot at your local used car dealership. The Jeep Patriot is a compact crossover SUV that bears a striking resemblance to the Jeep Compass.

The Jeep Patriot debuted in April of 2006 alongside the Compass at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Because there is only one generation of Jeep Patriots, there aren’t a whole lot of significant differences between model years.

The starting MSRP for a new 2017 Jeep Patriot was around $18,000. A used Jeep Patriot would knock around $3,000 off the MSRP for a 2017 base Sport model.

The Patriot made its debut in the 2007 model year as a compact SUV that blended the traditional boxy exterior stylings Jeep is known for with the modern features drivers expect from their SUVs.

The Patriot also makes an excellent gateway for those just getting in to off-roading; although front wheel drive is standard, with the right upgrades and configurations, the Jeep Patriot is officially Trail Rated. If you’re lucky, you may be able to find a used Jeep Patriot with the optional off-road package, which comes with a hill-descent system and an additional low gear.

Coming in the Sport and Limited trims, the four-door SUV seats a max of five passengers, making it perfect for smaller families or weekend excursions with a couple friends.

As for what’s under the hood, the Patriot comes standard with a 172 horsepower inline four cylinder engine and five speed manual transmissions, although a four speed automatic was also an option in this model year.

While 2008 only brought a handful of minor cosmetic changes, the 2009 Patriot got a new instrument panel, center console, and door panels including chrome accents. Along with cupholders illuminated by LED lighting, padded armrests, and removable carpeted cargo area flooring, this model year aims to increase comfort.

An overhauled exhaust and suspension system along with additional padding throughout the floor area reduces road and engine noise.

The Patriot was briefly announced as an electric version in 2009. The Jeep Patriot EV was an extended-range electric vehicle, also known as a plug-in hybrid vehicle, with a range of 40 miles solely on battery power and up to 400 miles per tank of gas. The division responsible for the Jeep Patriot EV was disbanded later in 2009 and no plans to continue production have been announced.

Under the hood, the Jeep Patriot comes with either a 2.0-liter or a 2.4-liter World gasoline inline-four cylinder engine. Drivers also have the option of not one, but two four-wheel drive systems: Freedom Drive I and Freedom Drive II. If you’re planning to take your Patriot off-roading, you’ll want the Freedom Drive II system. The Jeep Patriot is offered in five-speed manual, CVT, and available automatic transmissions.

The 2.0-liter engine delivers 158 horsepower, while the 2.4-liter engine offers 172 horsepower.

In 2011, the Jeep Patriot also got a minor facelift that included smaller front fog lamps and new trims. A 70thAnniversary Edition model was also offered in 2011 in honor of Jeep’s long and successful history. This commemorate edition was based on the Jeep Patriot Sport model and features olive or beige interior colors, unique alloy wheels, a nine-speaker premium sound system, and leather seats and steering wheel, among others. This model was only available from May to October 2011, so finding a used Jeep Patriot 70th Anniversary Edition would be a real treat.

In 2012, the Jeep Patriot nixed the Latitude trim and introduced a new Limited trim. Adding bright exhaust, bright roof rails, an upgraded body trim, an upgraded stereo, automatic climate control, leather seats, a power driver seat, and silver interior accents, this trim brought a little luxury to the compact SUV.

The model year 2012 also saw special edition models for the Jeep Patriot. In 2012, the Altitude Edition model, based on the Sport, was offered and featured black leather upholstery and black-finish alloy wheels, giving it a darker, sultrier look. This model began production in 2012 and was only available for a few months.

  • 2013

This model year sees a small increase in fuel economy, as the 2013 Jeep Patriot gets an EPA-estimated 30 MPG on the highway. Not bad for an SUV.

In 2013, a Freedom Edition model, also based on the Sport, was offered as homage to the U.S. Army and military, and the soldiers who have served. It was offered in a Commando Green Metallic exterior color which is not available on any other 2013 Jeep Patriot. The company also donated $250 for each special edition sold to several military-related charities, so finding one of these used is like finding a gem.
