Used BMW 3-Series

Ever wanted to own a luxury car, but can’t afford the price of a new one? More specifically, is your dream brand a BMW? If so, picking up a used BMW 3-Series is the way to go. Not only are you getting a vehicle that is considered to be the pinnacle of vehicle dynamics, but you’re also getting it for much less than what a new one would cost you. The fifth generation spans from 2006 to 2013, and was considered the best car in the entry-luxury category at the beginning of the generation.

As the years rolled on, it got even better. So, the more you’re willing to dish out for the fifth generation, the better your BMW experience will be. Unlike other vehicles though, you don’t necessarily have to dish out more to experience the best. Since the 2006 model was considered to be the best luxury model at the time, you can get a top-notch luxury experience for cheap money.

All around, the BMW 3-Series is considered to be a superb luxury vehicle — regardless of generation or year. In the same league as other entry-level brands like Mercedes-Benz, VW, and Audi, the company needs to make sure it is on point when it comes to the planning, design, and execution of their vehicles. If not, sales fall behind drastically. Therefore, consumers shouldn’t expect anything less than perfection from the BMW brand. With the fifth generation 3-Series, perfection is exactly what was delivered.

Since the previous 3-Series was introduced in 1999 in a sedan design, followed by a coupe, convertible, and wagon, it saw nothing but success. For the third generation, BMW obviously wanted to piggyback on this success, and so gave the vehicle a complete redesign. More features, stronger engines, and a larger interior are some of the more notable changes for the fifth generation models. More importantly, the 3-Series is much faster and larger than before, with plenty of features and options.

Therefore, grabbing one of these used models from the fifth generation is a great way to get that upscale, high-quality luxury car you’ve always wanted. All for an affordable price.

2006 BMW 3 Series

2006 BMW 3 Series

Unveiling the first model year of any generation is always a lot of pressure. Each generation marks big changes and perhaps even a new look or attitude. For the BMW 3-Series, this couldn’t be any truer. However, the company really went above and beyond when it came to designing this vehicle.

The only drawback about it (at the time) was its higher price compared to the competitors. But, because it’s now more than ten years old, affordability is no longer an issue. Interior storage space is the only downside you’ll be facing if you buy one used. Other than that, you’re getting perhaps the strongest affordable luxury vehicle found from the 2006 model year. The changes mentioned above (engine, size, etc.) have all been implemented, and it has excellent driving dynamics. The interior is full of high-quality materials, and you can pick and choose from whatever style you prefer — the sedan and wagon are even available in all-wheel drive.

If you’re looking for the most affordable 3-Series in this generation, backed by a general agreement between car experts (like Edmunds) that it’s a 9/10 vehicle, the 2006 model is for you.

  • 2007 BMW 3 Series

    2007 BMW 3 Series

The only downside about 2006 was the lack of a coupe, but 2007 made sure to remedy that. So, if you’re looking for one of those, you’ll have to grab a 2007 3-Series Coupe. This model has a sleek new body style compared to the previous coupe, and has a well-rounded engine. The twin turbocharged six-cylinder engine puts out a peppy 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque, and is also available on the sedan line for this year. The non-turbocharged variant is a 3.0-liter inline six, that puts out 230 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque. For these models, fuel economy is way above average, and it gets up to 20 mpg city and close to 30 mpg on the highway.

“Above average” is perhaps the best way to describe the 2007 3-Series. Thanks to that engine, it’s leagues ahead of any other model found in 2007. Best part is, the overall greatness that came with the redesign in 2006 still remains. It’s still the best vehicle in its segment for 2007, and while the coupe and turbocharging might cost a little more, it’s no longer nearly as expensive as it used to be.

A convertible and all-wheel drive 335xi sedan were both also introduced; obviously, diversity was the name of the game for this model year.

  • 2008 BMW 3 Series

    2008 BMW 3 Series

Only two years after a full and successful redesign — plus the two body styles and the renewed coupe model added last year — it only makes sense that the 2008 models experienced few changes.

BMW improved on what they could by adding a 335xi coupe, which provides all-wheel drive to the 3-series two-door model line. Which means if you’re looking for a coupe with a little bit more traction and control, you’ll have to nab one of the 335xi’s from 2008. Also, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters have been tacked onto sedans and wagons that are equipped with the Sport package and six-speed automatic transmission.

While it would be worth buying a 2006 or 2007 model to save some money (and get the same experience), the 3-Series is now loaded with four different body styles, and plenty of optional and standard features to be had on the 2008 model. Giving the rest of the generation a strong base to build on.

    2009 BMW 3 Series

    2009 BMW 3 Series

There were a few more substantial upgrades made to the 2009 models. While there were some slight styling changes, the real interest lies in the updated technology. Those looking for a slightly more modern look, close to the same price as a 2006, will be interested in a 2009 3-Series.

A new front fascia that is related to the more appealing coupe and convertible has been tacked on to the sedan and wagon, and the streamlined rear-end heralds back to the more attractive BMW a-typical L-shaped taillights. While the sedan and coupe were left alone, BMW wanted to bring the wagon and sedan up to speed with the times. Honestly, they needed it. Even though the changes were slight, they’ll make a large impact for those who are looking for a more upscale look at an affordable price.

On the inside, the technology update is for the iDrive electronics interface. Unlike the styling changes, it’s been drastically improved. The menus are arranged in a much more logical manner, and buttons surrounding the control knob allows easier use of common functions, like telephone, radio, and navigation. For better performance, that navigation system is now a hard-drive based function. This allows for faster processing of directions, and it also has real-time traffic information now.

  • 2010 BMW 3 Series

    2010 BMW 3 Series

Changes are, again, minimal for the 2010 model. Although, it does gain HD radio across all models, which is nice. Other than that, it remains relatively the same.

The HD radio isn’t worth the price jump alone, but a 2010 model is still a great choice if it’s the only one you can find. In 2010, the 3-Series was still the leading luxury automobile. You’d think one of the competitors would finally have figured out a way to halt BMW’s reign on the market, but apparently not.

Even if it’s similar to the 2009 or 2008 model, still consider a 2010 version for your used luxury car purchase. Not only is it affordable at that used price, but it was still considered to be the best luxury vehicle of that year. How often does a car go unchanged for a year and still dominate the competition? Not often.

  • 2011 BMW 3 Series

    2011 BMW 3 Series

Slight styling changes were made to the coupe and convertible for 2011, and a new 335is sport-model makes a first-time appearance, enhancing the long list of models that are already available. More importantly, consumers finally saw the appearance of a new turbocharged engine for this year. While the other engines were obviously still the preferred choice by many consumers, a new engine was long overdue.

The engine in question is a more powerful version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine that used to be found on the 335i. The new inline-six puts out 320 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque, and it even gets better fuel economy than the less-powerful 328i engine, with fuel economy numbers coming in at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

The diesel model still puts the competition to shame, with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged diesel that produces 265 horsepower and a whopping 425 lb.-ft. of torque. Numbers like 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway make it one of the most fuel-efficient luxury models on the market, and it can do zero-to-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, the fastest 3-Series available at the time.

    2012 BMW 3 Series

    2012 BMW 3 Series

After toiling through years of minimal changes, the fifth generation BMW 3-Series finally lands another full redesign. Updated styling (for the sedan models) and increased interior room knock out the two “issues” the previous years had, and it gets new engine and transmission options that provoke stronger performance and fuel economy.

The styling is heavily influenced by the 5-Series, so it has a much sleeker and curvier appearance than before. The front-end is unique compared to the previous models, and now has a widened grille with new headlight clusters. On the inside, it also gets a makeover, complete with three different option “packages” — Luxury, Sport, and Modern — providing color schemes and trim materials that were previously unavailable.

Instead of the more archaic inline-6 engine, the BMW 3-Series 328i sedan now receives a turbocharged four cylinder. This engine produces much more power and torque, and somehow still increased fuel economy. For those looking for a more classic BMW feel, you can still find a 3-Series used in 2012 with an inline-6 engine. Just grab a 335i.

With this redesign, it’s improved even more. The only drawback at the time was the higher-than-average price tag compared to the competitors. But, you’re buying it used, so it’s still going to be less than a new 2016 3-Series model. With the redesign, it’s just as modern as one — so you might as well save some money.

  • 2013 BMW 3 Series

    2013 BMW 3 Series

Good news if you want the most up-to-date fifth generation BMW 3-Series — because a less-expensive 320i trim (sedan only) made an appearance this year. On top of that, xDrive all-wheel-drive comes back to the lineup, and a new M Sport equipment line makes a debut.

That 320i trim comes with all the updated goodies BMW has to offer — like iDrive electronics interface with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium sound system — but for much less, which means you can get yourself a pretty cheap luxury vehicle. On this trim, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 puts out 180 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, with the all-wheel drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission optional. Fuel economy is 23 mpg city and 36 mpg (manual), and 24 mpg city and 36 mpg (automatic, RWD).

Other than that, the model carries over unchanged from the 2012 redesign.
